Cerviron® has been evaluated not only as a standalone treatment but also as an adjunctive therapy alongside antibiotics for the management of infectious and mixed vaginitis. The rationale for combining Cerviron® with antimicrobial treatment is based on the observation that, although antibiotics effectively eradicate pathogenic microorganisms, they may also disrupt the protective vaginal microbiota by reducing Lactobacillus populations, predisposing patients to recurrent infections, vaginal dysbiosis, and persistent symptoms.

A real-world post-marketing study involving 111 women compared Cerviron® used as monotherapy (71 participants) with Cerviron® administered in combination with antibiotic therapy (40 participants). The decision to prescribe monotherapy or adjunctive therapy was based on the treating physician’s clinical judgment. The study demonstrated that Cerviron® performed well in both treatment strategies, with comparable improvements in vaginal symptoms and no treatment-related adverse events reported during the three-month follow-up.

When used in combination with antibiotics, Cerviron® was associated with marked improvement in the clinical manifestations of vaginitis. After three months of treatment, 88.6% of women receiving adjunctive therapy had normal vaginal discharge, while only 5.7% had mild residual discharge and 2.9% showed moderate or unchanged symptoms. Similarly, 94.1% of patients reported complete resolution of vaginal burning and pain, and 91.2% experienced complete relief of vaginal irritation. Abnormal vaginal odor also resolved in the majority of patients, with 87.5% reporting normal odor after combined treatment.

An additional benefit of adjunctive Cerviron® therapy was its ability to restore physiological vaginal pH, an important determinant of vaginal homeostasis and protection against reinfection. Restoration of an acidic vaginal environment may facilitate recolonization by Lactobacillus species and reduce the risk of recurrent dysbiosis following antibiotic treatment.

The authors concluded that Cerviron® can be safely incorporated into anti-infectious therapeutic regimens as an adjuvant treatment, producing symptom relief comparable to monotherapy while offering additional support for restoration of the vaginal ecosystem.
